The latest electric car from Honda oozes charisma, and we can't get enough.
Whether we like to admit it or not, design is just as important—if not more—than function. If that weren't true, high heels wouldn't exist, our houses would mimic shoe boxes, and Aston Martin wouldn't exist as a company. However, when great design and function come together, that's something truly special. The Honda E, at first glance, appears to be one of those rarities. I mean, just look at it, this thing oozes charisma.
Then, there's the interior. Unlike other electric offerings in its class, the Honda E's great design continues inside the car. Not to mention, Honda designers/engineers also did a great job of integrating the video camera side mirrors, and it looks like some of the controls are still manual knobs—thank God. Additional features include a voice recognition software that will learn your voice over time for improved function, an app that will allow you to remotely control the climate among other things, and two 12.3-inch touch screens in the center of the dash that display vehicle information.
Sources say that the base model E will have a 35.5kWh battery with a range of 137 miles, and like the competition, will be able to rapid-charge 80 percent of its battery in just 30-minutes. To compare, VW's new ID3 has a 45kWh battery that offers 205 miles and the Tesla Model 3 has a 50kWh battery that has a claimed range of 240 miles.
But is that enough to sway buyers? Perhaps, but it certainly isn't enough for me. I'll take the design and Honda reliability over range any day.
Not to mention, the Honda E is a rear-wheel-drive hatchback with a "frunk" and perfect 50/50 weight distribution—but we'll just keep that between you and me. If anyone else asks, we'll just say we want to drive it for the polar bears.
Sadly, the Honda E won't make its way to the USA. At least not now, but we can only hope. Until then, I'll just stick to my gas-powered vehicles. Do you hear us, Honda?
