LINCOLN — Norris overthrew the monarchy.

The last school to win a Class B title before Omaha Skutt’s record nine-year run — on its fourth try in the championship match against the SkyHawks — regained the throne with Saturday night’s five-set win at Devaney Center.

“I believed in them the whole time and when they came out between the fourth and the fifth (sets), those are probably some of my most favorite moments ever," Norris coach Christina Boesiger said, “coaching in the huddle, and just the belief that they had in their eyes and the fire and the determination.

“They were very confident in it.”

Anna Jelinek, who led Norris with 22 kills, said the confidence of clearing the Skutt hurdle — including a semifinal loss in 2022, the SkyHawks ended the past five Norris seasons — has been there all season.

“We talked about we’re going to do it for us this year. We're going to do it and we're going to show the Norris nation, we're going to show everyone supporting us that we're good enough to do it," Jelinek said.

In the 25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-8 win that was the first time Norris had taken the SkyHawks to a fifth set, Skutt couldn’t put away the third set quickly. Norris avoided set point four times.

Skutt coach Renee Saunders said she believed her team still had the momentum until the fourth set.

“The fifth, I thought, was pretty back and forth and then we made a couple errors," Saunders said. “Then I’m like, ‘Oh, they can taste blood in the water.’ That was like my exact thought process.

“And as soon as that happened, I knew there wasn’t a lot else we could do.”

The No. 2 Titans (38-1) won eight of the final nine points, two on back-to-back aces from Rademacher, match point being a Skutt attack error.

“My ears are still ringing," Boesiger said. “It was amazing. Halfway through the fifth set, I was like, ‘You guys, look at this. Like 90% of this place is cheering for you. Just soak it and look around, look at our community, and they had a huge hand in it, too.’

“When you have that many people cheering for you and rooting for you and supporting you, I think it's something really special.”

Saunders said Skutt “has been carrying a pretty heavy load for a long time.” In the locker room, players were saying they let their parents down and kept apologizing to her.

“I’m like, no, you didn’t let me down, you played your hearts out. They played better. They won. They played a great game. They were a great, great team," she said.

Skutt’s Addison West, a junior pledged to North Carolina, had 31 kills in the final to finish the tournament with 82. She had 35 in a four-set opening win.

Abbie Hagedorn had 17 kills and Avery White 12 for the No. 1 SkyHawks (32-10). Alli Bornschlegl backed Jelinek with 15 kills.
