GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -Colorado Mesa Softball was eliminated from the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference Tournament, after a narrow 6-5 loss to the MSU Denver Roadrunners.

From there the Mavericks headed to the loser’s bracket looking to fend off elimination in the double-elimination style tournament.

CMU rebounded and handled their business taking down the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves 4-2 earlier in the day to stay alive and head to another win or go home matchup with the MSU Denver Roadrunners.

In the game against the Roadrunners, Mav star slugger Myah Arrieta extended her conference record, with her 27th home run of the season, to lead off the bottom of the first.

But the CMU lead did not last long, after a pair of solo homers by the Roadrunners in the top of the second to take the 2-1 lead.

From there things continued to snowball.

A CMU error paired with a two out, two run single by the Roadrunners put them up 6-2 at the time.

The Mavericks moved within one in the fifth inning, with a clutch three run homer off the bat of Chloe Valdez to make things 6-5, a score that held until the bottom of the seventh with CMU up to bat facing elimination, needing one run to tie and two to advance.

After a leadoff walk by Ava Fugate brought Ally Distler up to bat as the tying run. Distler had just made a great diving catch in the outfield the inning before.

Distler belted a ball that had the distance out to left but hooked just foul by a matter of feet, if not inches. But she was retired by a pop up the following pitch, and from there the Mavs could not advance a runner past second losing at a final of 6-5.

CMU now finds themselves on the bubble for an NCAA Regional berth. The top eight teams in the South Central Region will make the field, CMU was listed as 6th in the last rankings, and an early tournament exit certainly puts their standing in question.
