Colorado family gets surprised by an authentic supercar in their garage.

Sterling Backus and his son, Xander, have been working on a project in their garage that's a little different than most hobby or model car builds. They are 3D printing a life-sized, fully functional Lamborghini Aventador replica. (We told you about the project back in October.) The massive undertaking has gotten a lot of attention online, and supporters have been following along on the project’s Facebook page.

The team over at Lamborghini heard about the project these two were undertaking and gave the father and son one Christmas experience they will never forget. Lamborghini sent a team from Italy out to the Backus home and gave them the real thing. The family was also offered a spot in the car company’s new holiday commercial and, to top it off, they got to keep the car as a loaner for two weeks. So, in addition to getting to drive the $460,000 car every day for two weeks, the family will see themselves in the commercial, and online in stories like this one, for years to come.

The replica car is being done as a STEM project and tribute car, and Backus has spent over $20,000 on the project so far. He hopes to be done with the car in August and then plans to take it to local schools to show how technology, engineering, science, art, math, and trades can all come together to produce something like this.

This is one unforgettable, dream-come-true experience for the Backus family, and a great way to end the year. We can’t wait to see the finished product!
