Summertime means camping adventures, and that means more time spent under the stars. After a day of activities (or just a long drive), it's the perfect nightcap to spend a peaceful moment staring with awe at the stars sparkling above. And yes, I'm using the term nightcap to describe stargazing, but if you want, you can certainly add a bit of whiskey sipping to the moment. Of course, you don't need to go camping to enjoy the night sky; that just happens to be my typical experience.
There are many places throughout our beautiful state that offer unforgettable experiences for anyone looking to appreciate the wonders of the night sky. So, whether you're on a camping trip like I often am in the summer, or just want to venture out for a stargazing excursion, we've got you covered. You can even go to specific stargazing events if you're looking for a more structured experience. Read on to discover the premier destinations for stargazing in Colorado this summer, along with our lineup of celestial events.
Colorado's Best Stargazing Spots:
Curecanti National Recreation Area
Curecanti National Recreation Area is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places in Colorado to observe the stars. This gorgeous spot is located near Black Canyon of the Gunnison, so you might as well make this a multi-day trip and explore both areas! That's what the Colorado lifestyle is all about, right? Curecanti National Recreation Area features three reservoirs, including Colorado's largest body of water, Blue Mesa Reservoir. Enjoy water activities during the day, and take in the sparkling stars during the night. If you're lucky, you may even see the reflection of the night sky in the water, making for an extra special view.
Jackson Lake State Park
This spot became an International Dark Sky Park in 2020. It was actually the first Colorado State Park to receive this title! The lake adds an extra touch that takes the spot to the next level. It was even named one of the "Top 15 Park Beaches" by Reserve America.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park
For otherworldly views right here on earth, head to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This spot was where I went on my very first camping trip in Colorado. Spend your day exploring the Dunes and sandboarding, and watch the stars twinkle above the insane landscape when the sun has set. This is also considered an International Dark Sky Park, which is definitely something to keep an eye for when searching for stargazing spots if you haven't caught on yet! (Of course, you can still discover excellent stargazing spots without this specific designation.) While you're in the area, you can also head over to the UFO Watchtower to view the stars, and perhaps, other mysterious things in the sky.
Mount Blue Sky Recreation Area & Scenic Byway
This scenic byway, not too far from Denver, is actually the highest paved road in North America. This provides a really special opportunity to immerse yourself in the sky. There are scenic lookouts, so you can take your time and stop along the way up to take it all in. Just be sure to be extra careful when driving in the dark!
Colorado's Can't-Miss Stargazing Events:
Beyond traveling to stargazing spots, there are actual events around the state that add an extra level to your experience.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) hosts a couple of different night sky programs throughout the summer, with multiple dates. In addition to "Astronomy in the Park" and "Stories of the Moon and Stars," RMNP also puts on an Astronomy Festival!
Dark Skies Colorado
Dark Skies Colorado also presents a variety of star-studded events. From Public Star Parties to telescope workshops and more, there's something for everyone.
Stars Above Aspen
On August 12, visit Aspen Mountain for stargazing, sunset yoga, interactive presentations, guided telescope stations, and more.
As the balmy summer nights beckon you outdoors, Colorado's vast skies are a canvas awaiting your gaze. The locations and events we've highlighted are just the beginning of what this great state has to offer. Remember, every clear night offers a new opportunity to connect with the universe, so grab a blanket, a warm cup of your favorite night-time brew, and look upward. The stars are waiting for you.
