WISE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Two correctional officers who were admitted to a hospital after being stabbed on prison property have been discharged, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

“Our entire agency is relieved that all five officers involved in this heinous attack have now been discharged. They have constantly been in our prayers and are at the forefront of our thoughts,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “We wish them nothing but the best in their recovery and will continue to stand by them and the rest of our Wallens Ridge family. I want to say thank you to the medical professionals who rendered aid and care to our dedicated public servants.”

Investigators say the attack occurred Friday, May 2 at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap. Five of the six inmates accused of being involved in the attack are confirmed MS-13 gang members from El Salvador, who were in this country illegally, according to VADOC. Each has been convicted of violent crimes including aggravated murder, first- and second-degree murder and rape. One other inmate who is a suspect in the attack is a confirmed member of the Sureño 13 gang and from the United States, serving a sentence for second-degree murder.

Five VADOC officers in total were transported for outside medical treatment. Three officers, including two who sustained minor injuries while responding, were discharged the day of the attack.

The six inmates accused of carrying out the attack have been transferred to another VADOC facility.

“Our Corrections Officers are public servants who work around the clock to keep the Commonwealth safe,” Director Dotson said. “They protect their fellow officers, other corrections team members, people across Virginia, and the inmate population. Please know that our Department will seek to prosecute these inmates, and any inmates who so much as lay a hand on our officers, to the furthest extent of the law.”
