Yes, crimson clover is an actual flower that blooms in late spring.

It’s a little too early to visit the lavender fields in Maryland, but another flower will be blooming in May for your enjoyment. The farm that hosts a sunflower festival in Howard County each fall, has planted a field of crimson clover that is expected to bloom in a couple of weeks. The herb that inspired the '60s hit “Crimson and Clover" by the Shondells is actually a hearty plant that is harvested and made into hay for livestock. Also known as Italian Clover, the alfalfa-type plant blooms with rich pink and red flowers in late spring. This spring, Marylanders can experience 10 acres of the clover in all its glory during the Crimson Clover Festival in Fulton.

The Crimson Clover Festival is scheduled to take place at full bloom of the clover, starting on May 14. The farm expects the blooms to last for two weeks and will stay open as long as possible. On weekends during the bloom visitors can enjoy live music, merchandise vendors, food, and fun activities for the little ones. Visitors can even cut some of their own clover buds to take home.

Tickets for the festival will be available online or in-person and are $10 per person, free for children under 4. The Crimson Clover Festival will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and visitors will be required to follow all current CDC guidelines, including wearing masks when necessary and practicing social distancing. Remember, it is a farm and there may be mud, bugs, and rough terrain. Make sure to dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and insect repellant.
