The dangers of impeding cold weather has prompted the cancellation of area schools and organizations in Salina.

The National Weather Service in Wichita forecast wind chills as low as minus 20 degrees for Tuesday morning, in addition to the possibility of snow accumulation of up to 7 inches throughout the early morning and into the afternoon.

In an email sent to families and staff, Salina Schools USD 305, said it was canceling school on Tuesday, Feb. 18 because of the forecasted "bitter cold, wind chill and danger of frostbite."

As of now, a Salina Board of Education meeting set to begin on 5:30 p.m. Tuesday was still scheduled to take place at the district office, 1511 Gypsum Ave.

USD 307, Ell-Saline posted that it would also be canceling school because of predicted snow and "extremely cold wind chills" on its Facebook page .

Catholic Schools in Salina will also be closed with Sacred Heart Jr. and Sr. High School saying on its Facebook page that all classes at that school and at Love N' Learn Early Childhood Center, St. Mary's Grade School were canceled.

Salina businesses, services also impacted by weather



In addition to schools, other organizations in Salina announced impacts due to the winter weather.

In an email to the Journal, Rolling Hills Zoo said it would be closed on Tuesday.

Additionally, the Feb. 18 Salina Public Library board meeting is canceled, with the next set to take place at 7 a.m. on March 18 in the Prescott Room of the library.

OCCK Transportation said it was changing its services on Tuesday, with Salina CityGo only having regular routes and no peak routes and regional paratransit, GoAbilene, and GoConcordia running reduced schedules Tuesday. KanConnect and the 81 Connection services are both canceled for Tuesday. Additionally, OCCK said that passengers should expect delays across all services.
