Uncorking New Winter Adventures

Looking for something different to do this winter? When you think of Colorado in the winter, images of shredding powdered slopes may come to mind. But sometimes, it's nice to slow down a little and escape from the typical adrenaline-fueled activities. One activity you may not think of during the winter is exploring Colorado's wine country. Although many associate wine tastings with warmer seasons, winter provides a quieter, less expensive, and more unique experience. Exploring wineries provides the perfect opportunity to spice things up. Who says winter has to be so one-note? Do something unexpected this winter and explore Colorado's wine country!

Where Is Colorado Wine Country?

We may not live in California, but Colorado has a special wine country to explore. Colorado has two official American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): The Grand Valley AVA and The West Elks AVA. These regions are quite close to one another. The Grand Valley AVA stretches alongside the Colorado River, going from Palisade to Grand Junction. At the same time, The West Elks AVA meanders along the North Fork of the Gunnison River between Paonia and Hotchkiss. Palisade is at the center of Colorado's wine country and is often what many people think of when envisioning this region. (I've been dying to go there on a little wine trip). Although these are the only two official wine regions, you can still find wineries elsewhere in the state.

Winter Fun in Palisade

As it's probably the most iconic wine destination in the state, it's only fitting that we focus on Palisade. One particularly charming winter activity is going for a horse-drawn carriage ride. Why not pair that with wine and go on a carriage wine tour? JR's Carriage wine tours aren't exclusive to the winter, but the snowy season offers an especially enchanting backdrop for this delightful experience. Sign me up! If you don't want to miss out on the classic winter activities, don't fret. Powderhorn Mountain is only about 45 minutes from Palisades. This independent mountain is also a little less expensive than those associated with Vail and Alterra. There are also snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing opportunities in the Grand Mesa Area.

Must-Visit Palisade Wineries/Vineyards

Let's visit specific wineries and vineyards throughout Palisade's wine country this winter.

Where to Stay

You might as well stay in wine country for a night or two. Book a stay at the Wine Country Inn to fully immerse yourself in the wine spirit! This awesome Colorado wine-country experience is the perfect way to enjoy a wine-centric trip. You can even enjoy complimentary tastings of their private-label wines. Once again, I say, sign me up! There's also a year-round hot tub spa because you've gotta get some hot tubbing in during the winter.

With its picturesque landscapes and charming wineries, Palisade invites you to discover a different side of winter. From horse-drawn carriage rides to cozy tastings, each activity is a special experience. So, if you're seeking an alternative to traditional snowy escapes, consider indulging in the allure of Palisade this winter.
