TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - With one of the most shocking losses to Arizona State University in their more than a century-long rivalry, Wildcats fans are reacting to losing the Territorial Cup for the first time in two years.

While spirits were high for both sides at first, frustration mounted for UA fans as the chasm between the two teams’ scores widened. By the end of the third quarter, Arizona Stadium was overtaken by the Sun Devil faithful.

Emotions were high as the game clock hit zero — with the 98th Territorial Cup firmly in ASU’s hands, a dispirited crowd left Arizona Stadium.

“You know it was a tough season, but these kids played so hard,” said Ken Brown, a Wildcats fan. “And you know, as much as people want to look at the Wildcats and go ‘oh, poor us,’ every year is different.”

Brown reflected that every team has its ups and downs, and unfortunately, this season was a down for UA. He added that many people didn’t think U of A would have had the season they did last year, just as no one expected ASU to be so successful this year.

“It can be any team, any year,” Brown said.

And Daniel Cornwell, a Sun Devil fan, said he’s glad to see ASU getting the recognition it deserves.

“We’re working on getting that Big 12 championship. Being picked to be last in the conference the first year in,” Cornwell said. “It’s all looking good for the Sun Devils coming out.”

While thrilled to have the cup coming back to the Valley, Cornwell acknowledged that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Sun Devils.

“They beat us pretty good last year, so you know, we needed to get it back home,” Cornwell said.
