The Zen Blaster Active Ale clocks in at 90 calories a bottle.

If you're craving a light beer for your backyard hangs this summer, Flying Dog has just the ticket. The Frederick-based brewery is coming out with a beer that's low in calories but high in flavor called the Zen Blaster Active Ale. The limited-edition drink, which will hit store shelves sometime in mid-June, was created to match the demand for health-conscious products in the wake of renewed wellness practices during the pandemic.

“Changing mindsets around alcohol and active lifestyles, combined with a post-2020 desire to refocus on well-being, has increased interest in lower-calorie and lower alcohol craft options in consumers,” Flying Dog said in a press release.

The beverage is a light blonde ale featuring tasting notes of vanilla and tropical fruits, as well as lotus hops to "align your chakra." Contrary to their heavy hitters like the Snake Dog IPA or Gonzo Stout, it clocks in at 4.5-percent ABV and contains 90 calories per beverage. With a light, dry finish on the palate, it makes a fitting accompaniment to that beachside burger or seafood spread. The bottle also features artwork from the brewer's longtime artist Ralph Steadman.

As the state's largest brewer, Flying Dog has impressed beer enthusiasts for over 30 years with their edgy brand of craft beverages. They offer a permanent line and seasonal releases throughout the year. Recently, the brewery collaborated on a beverage with the Ocean City landmark Dolle's Candyland. The Saltwater Taffy IPA uses the confectionary's famous lemon saltwater taffy and can be enjoyed throughout the summer months.
