It's been a year of turbulence for Southwest Airlines.

In July 2024, it said it will ditch its famously chaotic open seating policy for assigned seats, starting in the second half of 2025. So long, Boarding Group C, which practically ensures a middle seat.

In February 2025 Southwest laid off hundreds of workers as part of its cost-cutting shakeup. It was the first layoff in Southwest's 53-year history.

Then came the big one: On March 11, Southwest announced the end of the beloved Bags Fly Free policy for most fare categories starting with tickets purchased May 28 and beyond.

But Southwest passengers who buy tickets by May 27 can still check up to two bags for free. Here's everything to know about the new Southwest baggage policy taking effect this month.

What is the new Southwest baggage policy?



Under the new Southwest baggage policy , most customers will pay to check baggage. Until now, Southwest's Bags Fly Free policy has allowed two pieces of checked luggage per person.

Checked bags must weigh no more than 50 pounds and measure no more than 62 inches in total dimensions. Overweight bags between 51-70 pounds cost $100; bags 71-100 pounds cost $125. Oversize bags between 63-80 inches also incur a $125 fee.

When will Southwest start charging for bags?



Southwest will begin charging for checked bags on flights purchased on or after May 28, 2025. If you book your flight by May 27, you’ll still get up to two free checked bags.

Does Southwest still have 2 free checked bags?



Yes, but not for long. The Bags Fly Free policy applies to tickets purchased by May 27, 2025. If you buy a ticket by May 27 and change it on or after May 28, checked-bag fees will apply.

Do Southwest tickets include a checked bag?



Southwest tickets purchased through May 27, 2025, will include two free checked bags.

Basic: Formerly Wanna Get Away. Baggage fees apply.

Choice: Formerly Wanna Get Away Plus. Baggage fees apply.

Choice Preferred: Formerly Anytime. Baggage fees apply.

Choice Extra: Formerly Business Select. Two free checked bags are included.

A-List Preferred members of the Southwest Rapid Rewards program will still receive two free checked bags. A-List members and some select customers will get one free bag.

How much is Southwest baggage fee?



As of May 16, Southwest has not revealed its baggage fee. American , Delta and United airlines charge between $35 and $50 for first and second checked bags.

Is Southwest carry-on free?



Yes. Southwest Airlines still allows free carry-on bags for all passengers. Each traveler is allowed one carry-on bag, such as a roller bag or tote, and one personal item, like a purse, briefcase or laptop bag, at no additional cost.

The carry-on bag must fit in the overhead bin and be no larger than 24 by 16 by 10 inches. The personal item must fit under the seat.

Why is Southwest charging for bags?



Southwest Airlines said charging for bags is part of a broader strategy to enhance profitability and align with industry standards. The airline has faced financial challenges, including declining profits and pressure from activist investors, prompting a reevaluation of its business model.
