Chronic Illness Symptoms Can Be Exacerbated in Summer -- Here's What You Can Do To Beat the Heat

Life with chronic illness is often a rollercoaster ride. One day you feel fine, then the next you can't get out of bed. For those afflicted with chronic illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), or Chron's Disease, rising summer temperatures can aggravate symptoms and be potentially life-threatening.
If this is your first summer post-diagnosis or your symptoms have become more advanced, below are some helpful tips to keep you cool and accommodate your condition:
  • Stay hydrated. If you live in a high-altitude area, this is especially important. Sip water slowly throughout the day and avoid drinks with high amounts of sodium.
  • Travel wisely. Ask your doctor for referrals to other physicians or hospitals where you plan on visiting this summer.
  • Know the symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Inform your family members/caregivers of the signs as well.
  • Stay cool. Keep the AC or fans on in your home. If your condition requires air conditioning, you may be able to get one that is tax-deductible. Keep ice packs in the freezer and use as needed.
  • Mind the sun's rays. Wear lightweight clothing or apparel with built-in UV protection, wide-brim hats, and carry an umbrella or parasol. Many medications can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so keep sunscreen at the ready.
  • Plan your day thoroughly. Before leaving your home, check the local weather for temperatures and air quality. Respiratory function can be compromised if excessive heat and poor air quality are reported. Consider running errands or going outdoors when the temperatures dip to a reasonable level. Remember that the sun is most powerful during the hours of 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Life with chronic illness can be frustrating and difficult, especially in the summertime. With all the activities that take place June through August, you may feel like you're missing out. However, with the right planning and accommodations, you can still enjoy summer.
