With the 38th pick in the 2022 MLB draft the Colorado Rockies selected outfielder Jordan Beck out of Tennessee. Bringing an exciting mix of a big body with big power, big speed, and a big personality, he wasted no time getting to work. He impressed in 26 games across the complex league and A ball enough to earn a quick promotion to High-A where he posted a wRC+ of 150 in 27 games prompting another promotion up to Double-A. His bat slowed just a little with the Yard Goats, but the Rockies were clearly still happy with his process as he got a 2024 Spring Training invite that he made the absolute most of. He put up an OPS of .952 in 18 games, showcasing his skills against major league pitching. He won the Abby Greer award for the Rox best player in camp and there were even rumblings he might make the team to start the year. Instead, he began his official campaign for this season by obliterating Triple-A. Over his first 16 games he hit five home runs, drove in 19, and scored 16 all good for a wRC+ of 174. He ultimately got to 25 games in the minors this season, slashing .307/.405/.594 to earn his call-up to the Bigs.
He made his MLB debut on Tuesday against the Marlins, promptly cracking a pair of base hits in his first couple of at-bats. But, of course, baseball isn’t that easy and naturally given the nature of the beast, he proceeded to strike out six times over the course of the rest of the series. He then ended up with the hat trick in his first game in Pittsburgh. The at-bats themselves are competitive and by and large he has not looked lost or overwhelmed at the plate or in the field but like with almost all prospects it is going to take some time for him to settle in. The most important thing from a big picture standpoint is that he has started every game since being called up and while its likely he could be sent down again when the club gets healthy, it’s clear the Rockies see Beck as a big part of their future. According to MLB Pipeline, Beck is the Rockies fourth best prospect and the 73rd best in all of baseball but it’s starting to look like he might outperform even those lofty expectations.
