A Kansas City man was sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years for his role in a deadly standoff in July 2024, according to the Jackson County prosecutor's office. Juan Maiden, 70, was sentenced for second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. This stems from a July 23, 2024, incident in which Maiden shot and killed a woman in a home, resulting in an hourslong standoff. Court documents said the victim's sister called police and told them that Maiden had shot the victim unprovoked and then shot her two more times. The sister witnessed the shooting and attacked Maiden, beating him with a printer and the gun before leaving the house and calling 911. Maiden was found injured in the basement of the home and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. At the time, he denied shooting the victim, providing a different account of the events. He was found guilty in November.
