ORLANDO, Fla. – A man was shot Friday afternoon when a fight broke out in front of a homeless shelter in Orlando, according to the shelter.

Orlando Union Rescue Mission said in a statement that two men were in line waiting to enter the shelter around 1:30 p.m. when they began fighting.

The mission said one of the men then ran to his car, grabbed a gun and shot the other man.

The injured man ran to a clinic at the shelter, where he was later picked up by an ambulance and taken to the hospital. The Orlando Fire Department told News 6 they responded to a “medical emergency” and transported one person to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Orlando Union Rescue Mission said the shooter was taken into custody, according to the statement. The shelter said “the shooting is a unique anomaly” and is the first one to happen in its 77-year history.

The Orlando Police Department said one person was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“All parties have been identified, and there is no threat to the community,” police said.

No other information, including the name of the suspected shooter, has been released.

An investigation is ongoing.
