ST. LOUIS — A MetroLink train hit and killed a person lying on the tracks east of the Cortex station Tuesday evening, police said.

"Despite the prompt actions of the operator, the train was not able to stop before the person was struck and killed," Charles Stewart, Metro Transit's chief operating officer, said in a statement.

Stewart said the person was in a highly restricted area east of Sarah. The person's identity and other details were not immediately released.

The incident caused the transit agency to stop service between the Grand and Central West End stations for two hours.
