New York state education leaders plan to eliminate the regents exam as a graduation requirement by January 2028, shifting to alternative assessments. Under this proposal, August 2027 would mark the final required regents exams. From then on, the exams would only measure progress, allowing students to earn diploma endorsements. The change aligns New York with more than 40 other states where standardized tests are not required for high school graduation. Instead, students could demonstrate their learning through projects or internships as part of the new “New York State Portrait of a Graduate,” which emphasizes real-world skills. While some critics view the move as lowering standards, educators argue it focuses on preparing students as capable citizens.
