BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The No. 25 Boise State Broncos defeated the Washington State Cougars 45-24 on the blue at Albertson’s Stadium in a huge matchup which could go a long way in determining the Group of Five playoff spot landscape. Boise opened the scoring on their first drive of the game with an Ashton Jeanty 64-yard touchdown run to send the fans at Albertsons Stadium into a frenzy. Washington State would respond quickly on their next drive as quarterback John Mateer marched his squad down the field and capped it off with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Mathers. The defenses stepped up for the remainder of the quarter, but early in the second BSU reached the red zone and ended the drive with a 29-yard field goal from Jonah Dalmas to retake the lead. Washington State matched with a field goal of their own, but before the half Ashton Jeanty added his second rushing touchdown of the game to send the Broncos to half up 17-10. In the third quarter the defenses held strong until the final two minutes when Maddux Madsen found his tight end Matt Lauter for a 22-yard touchdown. Wazzu opened the scoring in the fourth and pulled back within seven when Mateer hit Kyle Williams from 33 yards out. Then it was the Ashton Jeanty show again as the back added an incredible 59-yard touchdown run where he broke a handful of tackles on the way to the endzone and then another 2-yard touchdown on the next offensive drive to go up 38-17. Lauter added his second touchdown later in the fourth quarter on a fourth down conversion play, and the Cougars added a touchdown in the final minute, but it was only for pride as the Broncos take the big win 45-24. Ashton Jeanty carried the ball 26 times for 259 yards and four touchdowns in yet another amazing performance from the Heisman candidate. Matt Lauter caught four passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns to lead Bronco receivers. Up next is the Mountain West opener at home on the blue against Utah State next Saturday with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m.
