SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — With record-breaking heat this week, the Scottsdale Fire Department is urging hikers to be extra cautious if they head out to the trails. This comes after two people were rescued on Valley trails this week , and one of them died .

So far this year, Scottsdale firefighters say they have already had 29 heat-related rescues. “Right now, we’re averaging one a day already and it’s early into our season,” said Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio .

Bob Stamper, a volunteer with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy , is in charge of educating hikers about the trails and dangers. He said hikers often underestimate how hot our desert can get. “People from more humid climates don’t understand that when you’re in the Sonoran Desert and there’s very low humidity, that literally sucks the energy out of your body,” Stamper said.
