A shelter-in-place order was lifted for students, faculty and staff at the University of Virginia on Tuesday after a man was accused of fleeing a traffic stop and hitting at least two vehicles, prompting a police pursuit, officials said. Campus police in Charlottesville said in an X post around 1:40 p.m. that the shelter-in-place was lifted as they believed the suspect had left the area. University police initially sent an emergency alert around 9 a.m. telling people to shelter in place as they searched for a suspect on the school's campus, according to an X post shared by the law enforcement division. Virginia State Police said the search ensued after a state trooper tried to make a traffic stop of a Chevrolet Impala for an expired inspection sticker. State police began pursuing the vehicle after it refused to stop. The vehicle then collided with a state police vehicle and at least one other vehicle, authorities said. No injuries were immediately reported. Albemarle County and UVA police identified the subject of the search as Nyheem Hill, the officials said in X posts. Campus police said Hines has "no known affiliation" with the school, according to campus police.
