Some 200 Big Lots stores could remain open,
according to a court filing this week , as the Columbus-based retailer works its way through bankruptcy. And many of those on the list are in Ohio. Here's what to know.
What Big Lots stores will remain open?
In a court filing Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware,
Gordon Brothers Retail Partners , the Boston-based asset liquidation firm assisting Big Lots
in the bankruptcy process , provided a list of 200 locations that are expected to be taken over by Variety Wholesalers Inc., USA TODAY is reporting. In December, Variety, a retail company headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina, said it would
take over 200 to 400 Big Lots stores under a deal with Gordon Brothers.
Big Lots had 1,392 stores at the beginning of 2024, and now has 872 stores across the U.S., according to its website. The Big Lots stores to stay open, per the court filing, are in 14 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia and West Virginia.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy protection on Sept. 9, 2024,
the Dispatch reported previously . The company blamed inflation and high interest rates for taking a toll on its customers. Los Angeles-based investment company Nexus Capital Management had agreed to buy most of its assets, the company said, but that deal fell through in December. Gordon Brothers then stepped in to buy Big Lots out of bankruptcy and then sell some of the stores to Variety.

The week before its bankruptcy announcement in September, Big Lots revealed it planned to close a distribution center in Columbus that would put 379 workers out of jobs,
the Dispatch reported . The company told the state that the distribution center would shut down by Oct. 31. All workers were to receive pay and benefits through Nov. 3.
