Who's ready for the second game?

It's official: Netflix's popular Squid Game will be returning for a second season!

The South Korean show debuted on the well-known streaming platform this past September. Nine episodes long, it quickly became Netflix's biggest show ever, with over 165 billion hours streamed within the first month!

Squid Game featured a total of six games being played among 456 in-debt contestants, each trying to win the cash prize for completing all the games without dying. The contestants had been taken to a remote island, where elite-like people placed bets on whom would win. Dramatic and heart-wrenching, the show gained many fans for its horror-like violence and satirization of current money issues. It ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger, leading to audiences everywhere wondering if a second season would occur.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, who created the show as well as wrote and directed it, is excited to begin working on the sequel, which has yet to be greenlit by Netflix. Dong-hyuk admitted he struggled with parts of Season 1, calling it "quite tiring." However, he believes having a writers' room would better suit his writing process for the second season. Season 1, after all, took almost a decade to come to fruition, with the first two episodes taking months to be filmed.

"Writing (‘Squid Game’) was harder than normal for me as it was a series, not a film," said Dong-hyuk. "It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. Then I consulted verbally with friends, and picked up clues for improvements through my own pitching and from their responses.”

Talking to the Associated Press, he said, “So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season .... So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this… Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world.”

Dong-hyuk said he would like to first film another movie before beginning Squid Game Season 2. So far, his collection of works includes movies The Fortress, Silenced, and Miss Granny.

Hi! I've lived in the NOVA region most of my life, repping our sports' teams, finding unique and cozy coffee shops to indulge in, and exploring nature hikes I've never visited. I used to live under the mountains in Roanoke, VA as well as a handful of beaches in NC, but good ol' Northern VA had always called me back! I write novels for fun (currently working on a fantasy series that won't have a terrible ending like Game of Thrones, right?), and enjoy reading and diving into new experiences that help me grow.
