As if COVID-19 hasn't stolen enough ...

With little advertising and not a whole lot of notice, we typically expected a happy hour event to be offered from Starbucks on a select Thursday, from 3-7 p.m., each month. Happy hour events helped boost coffee sales in a typically slow time of day (afternoon and evening).

But not in December. And not in January. And we'll have to wait and see about February.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns, the next two events have been canceled for the national coffee house chain. According to Reuters, the happy hour events originally scheduled for December 17 and January 7 have been canceled.

"Partner care and safety remains the top priority,” the note from Starbucks said. “However, with the anticipated rise in cases as a result of holiday travel and the latest guidance from the scientific community to not gather indoors in large groups for a prolonged period of time, we feel it is best to pause Happy Hours.”

You can still acquire your beloved cup of joe from your local Starbucks, with many stores offering both carry out and drive-thru services.

There are nearly 17,000 Starbucks stores (corporate and licensed) across the United States (with 241 of those in New York, NY, alone). More than 35 million people visit Starbucks each month. As of 2019, Starbucks employed 346,000 employees.
