PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Backpacks 4 Kids AZ is a nonprofit organization in the Valley that provides students with backpacks full of school supplies as well as food and hygiene products to families who need them.

For a group like this to be successful, it takes a lot of hard work by volunteers like Debbie, who devotes countless hours. That’s why her friend Michele, who runs Backpacks 4 Kids AZ , nominated her for a visit from Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad.

“Debbie’s one of those people, she does so much for everybody, but never takes credit. You don’t meet many people like her that just give their heart,” Michele told Simone Cuccurullo.

She said Debbie works full-time but still volunteers at her center. She also helps feed the homeless on the weekend.

Debbie thought Michele was coming by her home to take her to breakfast, so she was a little surprised when she answered the door and saw Michele, Simone, and the rest of the crew.

“We heard about your work for Backpacks 4 Kids and we just wanted to ask you about that, if that’s okay,” Simone said.

Debbie explained that helping others fills her heart. She said that there have been times in the past when she’s literally given the shoes off her feet to a homeless person who needed them more than she did.

“It’s hot out there in the summertime and you can’t just walk with no shoes,” she said.

Simone told Debbie she was there with not one, but two different surprises. The first was a staycation at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort, where she’ll get a two-night stay, food credits and a pool cabana.

The second surprise was $5,000 from the Valley Toyota Dealers. Despite Michele’s insistence that she keep the money for herself, Debbie told Simone she was going to put it right back towards backpacks.

“That’s my passion,” she said with a smile.
