OCEAN CITY, Md. – Diakonia, a homeless shelter in West Ocean City, gives the unhoused a place of solace. Two compassionate volunteers have given back to the shelter, working behind the scenes to give back to the community.

Jackie Disharoon and Jo Miller are twin sisters, who selflessly gave their time at Diakonia. It started in 1980, when Jackie saw an ad for non-perishable food and called the shelter. Jackie started her service over 40 years ago and believes it’s the right thing to do. “I think everybody needs some support, and especially if they are in dire circumstances, most only come with the clothes on their back.” When she got the callback, she started making homemade bread on the 25th of every month to celebrate Christmas. Eventually, her sister Jo Miller got involved with buying and filling stockings, not just for children but adults.

Jo said since then, the twins have developed a relationship with the shelter, helping daily. “That was the beginning for both of us, and then it just mushroomed for both of us when we saw so many opportunities.”

Coming from divorced parents and a single mother of 5 children, things didn’t always come easy. The pair often did odd jobs, like babysitting and cleaning. They learned how important it was to push forward and support those who need it. “When there is a gift that comes to them from someone that they don’t know, it shows them someone in the community cares,” said Miller.

These incredible women faced similar circumstances in their childhood, and that’s why they can relate to those in need currently. “We were also almost homeless at one point, and a family took us in from friends, so we’ve been there,” said Miller.

For over 30 years, the twins have donated custom pillows, quilts, and stockings. People at Diakonia know them for the special cookies and cakes they bake. Jo has been so committed to the process that she frequently travels from Wilmington, Delaware every month.

In Greek, “Diakonia,” represents serving others, a principle Jackie and Jo embody completely. “We’re tuned into this program because we see the genuine need in this community, and it’s an ongoing need, so why should we stop?”

They’re encouraging community donations to Diakonia, highlighting it as a top homeless shelter on the eastern shore. “That’s one way people could help this program, and it’s a beautiful program. Quite frankly, I don’t know what Ocean City would do without it.”

Diakonia will hold a bingo fundraiser on March 13th. The event is called ‘A Night on the Town’ and will be held at Ocean Downs Casino. Doors open at 5, and the game starts at 6.
