PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A storm system passing to the north of Arizona will bring cooler temperatures to northern Arizona over the next couple of days and a few degrees of cooling at some desert locations.

Still, temperatures will continue well above normal and probably get even warmer next week. Then, a strong high-pressure system is expected to set up over the western third of the country.

Phoenix could easily see its first 90-degree temperature of the year by the middle of next week, and at this point, no rain is in the forecast for the next ten days.

Expect highs around 80 for Thursday through Saturday. That’s when the warming will begin. We’re forecasting highs of 83 on Sunday, 87 next Monday, 89 on Tuesday and 90 on Wednesday. If we get to 90 next week, it won’t be the earliest 90 on record, but it would be well before the average start of 90s which is April 4.

On this date in 1891, two major storms flooded out the Salt and Verde rivers in the Valley. At one point, the Salt River was reported to be 8 miles wide near the confluence of the Verde and through the old Phoenix townsite area, the Salt was reported to be 2-3 miles wide.
