Even the jungle loves to play in the snow!
It's been a winter wonderland in D.C. since last Sunday, and a few of the residents at the Smithsonian's National Zoo were delighted to see (and play in) the snow.
The zoo's panda family, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, were seen having an ultimate play snow day in a video released by the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. For the family's 5-months-old cub Xiao Qi Ji, it was the first encounter with snow. As the zookeepers reported, Xiao Qi Ji was nervous at first but managed to spend just a few (playful) chilly minutes outdoors.
❄️ As snow blanketed Washington, D.C., our animals woke up to a winter wonderland. With this weather event came another significant milestone—giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji’s first encounter with snow! Keepers say he took a little nip at the fresh powder. 🐾👅#SnowDay #PandaStory pic.twitter.com/8hYfYuoP5f

Here's another video showing Tian Tian still playing:
These giant bears are native to northern China so they're familiar with colder environments. This wasn't the panda parents' first snow, and certainly not their first play snow day. As for some other zoo residents, they had their fair share of snow day fun, too! Check out the live cams of the Gray wolves, beavers, and red pandas to see their snow experience and the zoo's at-home activity packet for elementary-aged students.
Due to the pandemic and the current health guidelines, the Smithsonian National Zoo is currently closed to the public.
