Want to go see a movie? The drive-in theater returns.

Joyful moviegoers have been hit hard by quarantine. There's something special about going to the theater to see a new release, but pandemic conditions have closed down traditional theaters. However, drive-in theaters might be the perfect solution to keep moviegoers safe while injecting some movie-magic fun into quarantine living.

Following approval from the Virginia Governor's Office and the Virginia Department of Health, the Family Drive-In Theater in Stephens City, Virginia is set to reopen for its 64th season on May 1, with social distancing guidelines in place.

What precautions are being taken?

The drive-in will be practicing strict social distancing rules like mandatory online ticket sales, decreased occupancy in the parking lot, and prohibited socializing. 

The drive-in theater speakers won't be turned on—instead, car-bound moviegoers will need to bring a portable radio or use their car radio and tune in to 94.9 FM or 92.9 FM to listen to the movie's audio.

Attendees can bring their own food and pay a $10 food permit, or order concessions via an app to pick up at a distance-controlled concessions counter.

Restrooms will be available for emergencies and will be sanitized after each use.

Another Option

In Lynchburg, Virginia, the Nomad Coffee Co. is testing out a portable drive-in set-up they call Nomad Movies. They're doing a private test-showing for the Lynchburg Humane Society and working out the details for a 50-car public showing.
