Volunteer and cleanup efforts are underway after a tornado damaged areas from Clayton to north St. Louis on Friday.

The city of St. Louis recommends volunteers helping clean up neighborhoods move debris into large, organized piles at the edge of the property, not in the street. Keep house debris separate from tree debris; bricks need to be piled separately to be used for rebuilding. The city itself is still working to build a volunteer infrastructure. Much of the volunteer efforts are organized through residents and local organizations.

Volunteers should also avoid downed wires or other safety areas. Wear closed-toe shoes and safety wear such as goggles or masks where appropriate.

Shelters

IDs are not required at American Red Cross shelters. St. Louis County library social workers can help find emergency housing and shelter, food assistance, help with applications and mental health resources. You can also call 211, United Way's health and human services support line, for help with finding shelter, food or other resources.
