Two Front Range college towns are doing something right.

The average life expectancy in the U.S. has been on the decline for several years, but it finally seems to be leveling off.

According to USA Today, "An American born in 2020 has an average life expectancy of 79.1 years – but this can vary widely from place to place across the country."

While rural areas' life expectancy is lower than a decade ago, city dwellers tend to have better access to higher-paying jobs and healthcare, thus, their life expectancy is on the rise.

If you are hoping to extend your life as long as possible, USA Today has ranked the top 40 major metro areas in terms of citizen longevity using County Health Rankings and Roadmaps data.  

Well over half of the cities are in the western half of the U.S., and that includes the No. 5 ranked Colorado town known for its healthy and active lifestyle: Boulder. 

Boulder has a life expectancy of 82.97 years, with one of the lowest obesity and smoking rates of all the cities surveyed. It also had the lowest number of adults who don't exercise regularly. It is no surprise that Boulder finds itself near the top of the list. 

The Colorado town only ranked behind Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (4); San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California (3); San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California (2); and the winner, Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island, Florida (1).

Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island has an average life expectancy of 86.6 years. While it doesn't have quite the same health statistics as Boulder, Florida is a popular retirement destination, and saved income and healthcare are readily accessible.

Fort Collins also made the list at No. 34, boasting a life expectancy of 81.56 years and similar positive health statistics as Boulder. 

Coming in at the bottom of the list (though it's still in the top 40 cities across the country, so it's by no means a slouch) is Bellingham, Washington, with an 81.32-year life expectancy.
