Here is a D.C. tourist destination/historical site you probably haven’t visited yet: President Lincoln’s Cottage. You probably didn’t even know President Lincoln had a cottage, but yes, it does, in fact, exist, and it’s actually located in Washington, D.C.! 

Today, the cottage stands as a museum and store for the public to visit. Open since 2008, the museum—called the Museum of Ideas—is located in the Petworth neighborhood of D.C. and focuses on being a ... “nontraditional 'museum of ideas' that takes a fresh look at Lincoln’s life and legacy in an authentic place—his beloved home.”

It’s said that President Lincoln preferred this home over the White House and is the place where he actually sat down to write the Emancipation Proclamation. 

You can walk through the museum on a guided tour, where you can learn from an expert tour guide about Lincoln's ideas and experiences in regard to the Civil War, as well as "America’s struggle to reconcile competing definitions of liberty and equality.”

Tickets are required for entry into the museum, and it is highly recommended that you buy them ahead of time. You can purchase tickets online. The museum is located at 140 Rock Creek Church Road NW, Washington, D.C., 20011.
