Not all pandemic news is bad news.

Broadway musical lovers and Hamilton fans are canceling their weekend plans: The long-promised, long-awaited Hamilton film of the original Broadway production will actually be released to the Disney+ streaming service 15 months earlier than its original theater release date of October 15, 2021. It will start streaming to Disney+ subscribers on Friday, July 3, just in time for Independence Day.

With live Broadway performances canceled for the foreseeable future, and the country in need of inspiration in the midst of a crippling pandemic, the news that the powerful, award-winning musical will now be able to be seen by the masses is, frankly, pretty heartening.

“In this very difficult time, this story of leadership, tenacity, hope, love & the power of people to unite against adversity is both relevant and inspiring,” Disney executive chairman Robert Iger tweeted.

The brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton depicts the story of one of America's founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The Broadway musical is popular with audiences around the world, though tickets to a showing have been expensive and sometimes difficult to come by in the past.

The movie is actually a filming of a June 2016 production at the Richard Rodgers Theater and stars the original Broadway cast—a detail that is important to Hamilton fans.
