A rainy Monday could turn to snow ahead of a bigger snowstorm on Wednesday.

The first snowstorm of the season is heading its way to the DMV. The storm could produce up to eight inches or more, with the highest concentrations hitting central and western Maryland along with northwest Virginia. Some areas of Maryland and Virginia could get snow in the afternoon on Monday, as rain turns to snow in the higher elevations. Wednesday’s storm is expected to start mid-morning and could lead to slick and dangerous roads during the evening commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Wednesday morning into Wednesday night for parts of Maryland and Virginia. Some weather models have forecasted up to a foot of snow, mostly in the higher elevations. The heavy snow is most likely to fall in northern Baltimore, northwest Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, and northwest and central Harford counties. In Virginia, northern Fauquier and western Loudoun counties are expected to get the brunt of the storm.

Better news for commuters on the I-95, as snow is expected to turn to rain as the day goes on. Temperatures are expected to hover in the 30s during the day and could drop into the 20s overnight to Thursday. The rest of the region can expect at least a wintry mix of snow and rain towards the end of the day. Areas near the bay to Ocean City will be in the 40s, probably dashing the possibility of snow.

The NWS is warning of treacherous travel, closures, and the possibility of power outages. Residents should stock up on supplies and make dig out winter gear and snow shovels. Don’t expect much of a warm-up after the storm passes. Thursday’s forecast only shows highs in the upper 30s, and weekend highs are only expected to reach the 40s with a slight chance of snow on Sunday night.
