Lights, camera, action! These NoVA theaters are bringing you back to the movies.
Did you miss the fresh smell of popcorn, the condensation dripping down your drink, the booming sounds of action, and the excitement of seeing something new? Well, it’s all coming back.
Movie theaters across the nation are reopening to bring fans back into the heat of the action. Each of these theaters will open with strict social distancing guidelines which include limited seating, extensive cleaning, and the enforcement of face masks.
Many theaters in Virginia are on the list of venues set to reopen in the next week, while theaters in Maryland and D.C. will remain closed due to local guidelines that limit mass gatherings.
So, if you’re looking for some movie magic, head to Northern Virginia and check out these theaters.
From its movie-themed food and drinks to its watch parties, the Drafthouse is all about themes, and the pandemic is no different. The Drafthouse is set to safely reopen select theaters on August 21, with more locations reopening the week after. As theaters reopen, Alamo Drafthouse will offer coronavirus-themed promotions that feature movies related to lost time and masks.
The first is called “Making Up for Lost Time” which will feature movies about time travel, time machines, and time warps. Therefore, the theaters will host free exclusive screenings of Bill & Ted Face the Music on August 26, one day before the film is released to the public.
Alamo Drafthouse is also running a program called “Masks” which will celebrate masked superheroes and villains by playing films such as Batman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Mask of Zorro.
The Alamo theaters in Winchester and Charlottesville, Virginia, are set to open on August 21, while the locations in Ashburn and Woodbridge will likely open two weeks after.
AMC announced it was opening a select number of theaters on Thursday, August 20, with a promotion called “Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices." Therefore, tickets on August 20 will only cost 15 cents, the price it cost to watch a movie in 1920 when AMC opened its first theater in Kansas City, Missouri.
AMC is also bringing back $5 (plus tax) classic movies starting August 21 and offering $5 food and beverage specials to help you relax while watching some of your favorite films.
Three of the theaters AMC plans to open on August 21 are located in the DMV. These include:
- AMC Hoffman Center 22 (Alexandria, VA)
- AMC Tysons Corner 16 (Mclean, VA)
- AMC Potomac Mills 18 (Woodbridge, VA)
Regal announced its plan to reopen theaters on Friday, August 21, with strict social distancing and cleanliness guidelines. Tickets are already available for purchase online.

Cinemark Theaters has already started reopening some of its locations with deals and promotions. Each of the theaters will feature comeback classics, which will offer $5 movie tickets ($3 for children and seniors) for some of the most iconic films of all time. Some of these films include Inception, Jurassic Park, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Back to the Future.
You can also grab some food with discounted prices that include $5 for a large popcorn, $3.50 for a large fountain drink or ICEE, and $2.50 for candy.
The Cinemark Fairfax Corner and XD in Fairfax, Virginia, is already open, and Cinemark Centreville 12 in Centreville, Virginia, will open on August 21.
Angelika Mosaic (Falls Church, VA)
Angelika Mosaic has been offering a $10 concession voucher with the purchase of $50 in e-gift cards throughout the pandemic. Now, it’s looking like you can start to use those concession vouchers.
According to its website, Angelika Mosaic is set to show films on Friday, August 28.
