What a catch!

Rob Priest set out Wednesday morning, August 5, for a regular fishing trip aboard Top Man. Only he didn't bring in the regular haul—he reeled in a barracuda. Captain George Wendling of Top Man and Priest set sail off the coast of Ocean City, Maryland, that morning, and Priest made the catch near Baltimore Canyon.

Baltimore Canyon is a popular spot for angling with its wide variety of bluewater aquatics. People have caught and spotted various marlin and tuna as well as mahi-mahi. But up until now, no one has reeled in a barracuda.

According to their Facebook statement, the Maryland DNR considers the barracuda a "rare summer stray which may have wandered a little off course." So where do barracudas generally hang this time of year? Usually in waters that stay around the mid-70s to 80s range in temperature (°F), so think the Florida Keys. It's no wonder though that one wandered this way. With record-breaking temperatures all over the world reported in July, the local Maryland waters had probably heated up just enough to entice this confused barracuda.

Maryland has been keeping fishing records since 1966, and this barracuda (pictured above) is the first to appear in the records. Although the size of this particular catch has not been officially released, barracudas in general can reach up to 10 feet in length. Definitely not the fish I want to come across in the water! Although, the barracuda is generally interested in other fish as its main source of nutrition, which is probably why Priest was able to catch it while on the hunt for some less predatory kinds of fish.

This isn't the first breaking news report in Ocean City, Maryland, having to do with fishing this summer! On July 30, Jeff Wright caught a 72.8-pound mahi-mahi, breaking the 35-year long record for mahi-mahi catches in Maryland. If these kinds of catches keep up in Maryland, I think we're going to need a bigger boat ...

What do you think, Maryland? Are we going to see anymore catches like this this summer? Let us know in the comments!
