Buckingham Palace announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. She was 96.

Buckingham Palace released the following statement: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Preparations for Queen Elizabeth's death, also known as "Operation London Bridge," immediately went into effect after her death. Here's everything we know so far about Queen Elizabeth's funeral:

When Is Queen Elizabeth II's Funeral?

The queen's funeral is planned to take place on Monday, September 19.

Before then, however, the Queen's coffin will be carted on a gun carriage from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall on Wednesday, September 14, in a silent procession. Here, the Queen will lie in state until the morning of the funeral.

On the morning of the funeral, the Queen's coffin will then travel to Westminster Abbey. After the service, the coffin will travel to Wellington Arch before the procession goes to Windsor.
