KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Thursday night, a 21-year-old died after an interaction with another man at a gas station off Independence Avenue, this is the fourth homicide at this store since 2023.

“It was not the first person that we know that has died here,” said Employee of the gas station, Cristian Guzman.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. at a gas station near Chelsea and Independence Avenues.

Kansas City, Missouri Police said 21-year-old Angelo Brayboy was found inside the convenience store with a gunshot wound and later died at the hospital.

KCPD said it is still determining what led up to the shots being fired to include if there was an argument.

In March 2024, two men were killed after an argument took place inside the business.

37-year-old Nicholas Lewis and 34-year-old Reginald McGee died in that shooting.

On November 3, 2023 , 22-year-old Mihail Martinez-Aguilar lost his life after getting into an argument and being shot at the gas station.

“That is not stopping me from working you know and there is nothing we can do to stop the violence, but we are trying to,” said Guzman.

On Friday, bullet holes and marks could be found on the window and atm at the store.

Mattie Rhode Center workers were on site with StandUp4Peace, a violence prevention program.

They focus on neighborhood canvassing, mediation services, and case management.

“It is sad to hear that we have been out here trying to prevent violence from going but it is heartbreaking to hear one has happened,” said Mattie Rhodes Center Community Outreach Worker, Melani Collazo.

Within 24-48 hours, they arrive at a crime scene to provide resources to families, witnesses, and the community.

It’s something they do every time violence affects the historic Northeast.

“There are people out here that want this to stop so that shouldn’t make anybody afraid to come out because I still come out to do my job sadly I know this happened but to try to prevent the next one from happening,” said Collazo. She added, “It is heartbreaking seeing mothers cry, cousins, brothers, sisters, everybody like I hate that families are losing loved ones to gun violence.”

Working at the store and Mattie Rhodes, Guzman wants to see his community thrive and hopes more support can be brought to the area.

“There is nothing to be scared of I mean yes it is a shooting, but this is not the first one that happened in Kansas City and if we continue to be scared there is not going to be change,” said Guzman. He added, “More patrolling maybe, more activities going, on more fundraising, more funding within this area I feel like the more support we receive I feel like the more support they will see and try to do better.”

If you or someone you know has been impacted by gun violence, Mattie Rhodes Center is one of the many nonprofits that can help. More can be learned here.
