Look back at our live updates of the game, which was played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The
Arizona Cardinals fell to 1-3 on the season with a 42-14 loss to the
Washington Commanders . The Cardinals scored on their opening possession but struggled the rest of the way. Quarterback Kyler Murray finished 16-for-22 for 142 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked four times for a loss of 27 yards. His Commanders counterpart, Jayden Daniels, was 26-for-30 for 233 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also had eight carries for 47 yards and another TD. James Conner led Arizona with 18 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Marvin Harrision Jr. had five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals are scheduled to face the San Francisco 49ers on the road in NFL Week 5 on Oct. 6.
Kevin Durant celebrates birthday at Cardinals-Commanders game
Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant wore a Commanders jersey on Sunday as he celebrated his birthday at State Farm Stadium. With KD at the game were Magic Johnson, Josh Harris, Mark Ein, Mitchell Rales, Eric Holoman, Kevin Durant, Vernon Dixon, and Rich Kleiman.
Cardinals have no answer for Commanders
The Commanders needed just 2:41 to move the ball 76 yards over eight plays for their fifth touchdown of the game. Jeremy McNichols carried the ball 7 yards for the touchdown. He has eight carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. leads Washington with 21 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. QB Jayden Daniels has eight carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. He is 26-for-30 passing for 233 yards and another TD.
Commanders win challenge
Kyler Murray completed a deep pass to Michael Wilson, who fumbled, but was ruled down by contact. The Commanders challenged the call on the field. After review, the call was overturned. Washington received the ball at its own 23.
Commanders in control
Jayden Daniels completed a 10-yard pass to Terry McLaurin and a two-point conversion was successful as the Commanders essentially put away the Cardinals. Arizona trails by three touchdowns with 8:25 to play. Daniels is 25-for-28 passing for 206 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He hasn't been sacked. He's completed passes to nine different players.
Cardinals take another big gamble
The Cardinals converted on fourth-and-12 from their own 49 — and they needed to. Trailing by 20 with nothing happening on offense, the Cardinals took another gamble, much like on their first touchdown. The conversion was the spark they needed. Arizona finished the 74-yard drive with a touchdown — their first since the first possession of the game when they scored on a fourth-down play. James Conner carried the ball 6 yards for the touchdown.
Fans boo Cardinals
A particularly bad series in the third quarter, had Cardinals fans booing their team. On the possession, the Cardinals had a run of 11 yards and a 10-yard completion called back on holding penalties. After Kyler Murray was sacked, the Cardinals faced a third-and-34 from their own 6. On third down, Emari Demercado carried the ball for 8 yards, which gave punter Blake Gillikin some room to work. He booted the ball 62 yards, but that was after fans already began with the boos.
Jayden Daniels extends lead for Commanders
Aided by a 47-yard pass interference penalty, the Commanders scored 1 minute 8 seconds into the second half. Daniels ran for the 9-yard touchdown that was set up by the penalty, which put the ball on the Cardinals 9. The Commanders have now scored 24 unanswered points.
Cardinals vs Commanders halftime report
The Arizona Cardinals scored the first points of the game, but since then almost everything has gone the way of the Commanders. QB Kyler Murray was 3-fo-3 on that first drive, but since that, he is just 6-for-10. He's been sacked twice for 13 yards. The Cardinals are just 1-for-6 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down. Near the end of the first half, Arizona had the ball and looked to at least get a field goal. However, the Cardinals didn't just turn the ball over on downs, when they failed to convert on fourth-and-1. Murray was sacked for a loss of 7. Those yards helped the Commanders position themselves for a field goal. Washington QB Jayden Daniels is 11-for-13 for 96 yards with an interception. The Commanders are 5-for-6 in third-down conversion attempts. They have out-gained the Cardinals 220 to 122.
Tommy Lloyd at Cardinals game
Arizona Wildcats men's basketball coach Tommy Lloyd was in attendance at the Arizona Cardinals game on Sunday.
Cardinals change their fortunes
Garrett Williams intercepted Washington QB Jayden Daniels' pass intended for Terry McLaurin. At the time, the Commanders were driving on the Cardinals' side of the 50. Williams jumped to grab the ball at the 18. The turnover was the first by Washington this season. Nothing came of the possession for the Cardinals as they went 3-and-out.
Commanders lead Cardinals early in second
Jeremy McNichols barrelled his way to a touchdown, a seemingly odd description for a 27-yard run. But, that's what it was as McNichols shed would-be tacklers. It was his second carry of the game. The Commanders traveled 93 yards on 13 plays to take the lead.
Cardinals-Commanders tied after first quarter
Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is 5-for-7 for 36 yards and a touchdown. He led the Cardinals on a first-possession touchdown drive. James Conner has seven carries for 44 yards — more than doubling his output for the entire game against the Lions last week. Marvin Harrison Jr. has three catches for 21 yards and a touchdown. Washington QB Jayden Daniels is 5-for-5 for 43 yards. Brian Robinson Jr. has seven carries for 45 yards.
Commanders even score
As quickly as the Cardinals scored, the Commanders responded. Washington used nine plays to cover 70 yards. The drive was capped by a 6-yard run by Brian Robinson Jr.
Cardinals gamble pays off
On fouth-and-inches from the Washington 2, the Cardinals made the risky call of putting the ball in the air. Another coach might have kicked the field goal or handed the ball off. The playcall paid off as Kyler Murray completed a 2-yard pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. for a touchdown. The point after was good. The drive began after a 39-yard return by DJ Dallas to start the game. The Cardinals used nine plays to cover 55 yards.
Cardinals receive opening kickoff
The Cardinals offense will get the first chance to strike. Washington will kick off to start the game.
