About the Ravens

The Ravens rebounded from an 0-2 start to win their final four regular-season games and capture the AFC North for the second straight year. However, a season that saw Lamar Jackson finish second in MVP voting and the offense he quarterbacks rank No. 1 in the league ended with a disappointing loss in Buffalo in the AFC divisional round.

The Ravens return most of the key offensive players from that team, and they’ve added veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the mix. Their biggest addition defensively this offseason is probably senior defensive assistant Chuck Pagano, who will lead a secondary that will have some new faces.

Scouting the decision-makers

DeCosta has been in his current role since 2019, but he’s been running the Ravens’ draft since 2003, when he was the team’s director of college scouting. The Ravens emphasize a collaborative approach where scouts, personnel staff and coaches are given the opportunity to push for certain prospects. They adhere to a “best-player-available” drafting philosophy and never hesitate to trade back to accumulate more picks.

Edge rusher: Kyle Van Noy, Odafe Oweh, David Ojabo, Tavius Robinson, Adisa Isaac and Malik Hamm are all still under contract, but the first three are in the final year of their deals, and Hamm is running out of chances to remain healthy and make an impact. This is certainly a prominent need for the future. Finding another impactful pass rusher would help quite a bit in the present, too.

Defensive back: Baltimore has only five corners and three safeties on its roster, so reinforcements are needed. The Ravens believe in drafting corners every year, and the first-round selection of Nate Wiggins in 2024 won’t prevent them from grabbing another cornerback early. Star safety Kyle Hamilton also needs a running mate.

Offensive line: Starting left guard Patrick Mekari and reserve guard/tackle Josh Jones departed in free agency, leaving the Ravens in need of some depth up front. They feel good about Andrew Vorhees’ ability to step in at left guard, but that won’t stop them from targeting interior offensive line help in this draft. Despite re-signing Ronnie Stanley, they also need contingency plans at both tackle spots.

Defensive line: After having the same defensive line personnel in each of the past two seasons, the Ravens now need to replace the retiring Michael Pierce and free agent Brent Urban. They have targeted this draft as a way to bring in some help for Nnamdi Madubuike and Travis Jones. They’ll have plenty of options in every round.
