A Chicago man was sentenced in Johnson County court Tuesday to 10 years in prison on a charge of third-degree sexual assault.

Jailyn Kelly, 26, sexually assaulted a sleeping Iowa City woman on Oct. 17, 2018.

According to testimony at trial, she was sleeping in an Iowa City residence when she awoke to a bright light in her face from a phone and a man was on top of her, sexually assaulting her, she told police.

She said the man was a stranger. She tried to cover up her body and told him “no,” but he pulled the blanket away. When the woman was able to grab her phone and sent a text for help to her friend, Kelly started grabbing his things and left the residence, according to a criminal complaint.

Police found surveillance video from the apartment building that showed a man matching Kelly’s description entering the apartment where the woman was sleeping, then showed him leaving later with a blanket and the flashlight on his cellphone turned on.

Kelly admitted that he had been in the Iowa City apartment where the sexual assault happened, but claimed he had not interacted with the woman. Kelly’s DNA, which was tested as part of the investigation, matched DNA from a sexual assault kit collected from the woman.

In April, a jury found him guilty of the assault.

“I believe what my rapist did to me was the most disgusting, gut wrenching, unforgivable act … I will never get that part of myself back, I will have to live with the fear and the disgust and the never ending pain of what was done to me,” the victim wrote in an impact statement read during the sentencing hearing Tuesday. “I have been determined to stand up for myself because I know a lot of other victims can’t.”
