IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - A medical examiner says he found Tommy Curry died from multiple gunshot wounds. That was a part of just some of the testimony from day two of the trial of an Indiana man accused in an Iowa City man’s murder.

Renard Winfield of Gary, Indiana is charged with 1st Degree Murder in the shooting death of Tommy Curry in April 2021.

Thursday in court, the medical examiner assigned to this case described Curry’s wounds. He says he was able to identify various gunshot wounds.

In court, the prosecutors asked the examiner to describe where Curry had been shot.

“Mr. Curry had several gunshot wound defects in his body and was located on his left arm, chest, a probable gunshot wound on his scalp and other gunshot wounds on his left hand,” said Dr. Dennis Firchau.

Also on the stand this morning was one of the responding officers who described seeing what looked like bullet holes in the victim’s car windshield.

“In regards to gunfire, there was damage to the windshield, what looked like bullet holes. There was damage to the rear windows, presumably from the bullets passing through the front and going out the rear. There looked to be some damage to the seat that Tommy Curry was sitting in, and there were injuries to Tommy himself,” said Officer Dan Boesen with the Iowa City Police Department.

During cross examination, the defense asked about the building and the facilities on the property, arguing there are places for people to hide after committing the crime as opposed to driving away which is how police believe the defendant left the scene.

Testimony will continue Friday morning.
