EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Vanderburgh County dispatch confirms there have been multiple slide offs this morning on I-69 after Evansville was blanketed with snow overnight.

Indiana State Police say several patches of black ice on I-69, I-64 and US-41 caused problems for drivers.

ISP Master Trooper Michael Finney says part of the reason for all the crashes is that road treatments weren’t as effective because of weather conditions.

“A lot of the chemicals that the INDOT workers put down is activated by sunlight,” said Master Trooper Finney. “And with the cold temperatures, the amount of snow we had and the overcast, the chemicals weren’t working obviously, nothing was melting.”

Even late into the morning after some of the snow and ice had melted, first responders continued to get calls about crashes.

Isidaro Perez says he was headed to work around 3:30 am when he felt his car hit a patch of black ice.

“My car started shaking and it slides off the road,” said Perez.

Perez says he hit a patch of black ice causing him to crash into a traffic sign before sliding into a ditch.

He walked away without a scratch, but his car wasn’t so lucky.

“It’s a lot of damage,” said Perez. “I think it’s going to be totaled. There’s a lot of damage in the back and the front side.”

Even with low chances for more snow, Trooper Finney says drivers on their morning commutes need to exercise caution. He says the drop in temperatures after sunset could create even worse icy conditions on the roadways overnight.

“Give yourself a little extra time to get to work tomorrow morning,” said Finney.

Indiana State Police recommend giving yourself extra time Monday to navigate the roads if you have an early morning commute.

It’s also wise to pack warm weather attire in your car such as a blanket or coat in case you do find yourself in an accident.
