Sydney proved their own worst enemy as inaccuracy and butchered chances saw them sink to an eight-point loss to Port Adelaide at the SCG on Sunday.

The Swans only converted eight per cent of their inside 50 chances in the first half, and despite flying home late fell short 13.7 (85) to 10.17 (77).

“Ultimately accuracy has killed the Swans,” Gerard Healy said after Sydney’s 5.8 (38) final term.

“You don’t get four points for expected score.”

Port Adelaide posted consecutive wins for the first time in 2025, but it came at a cost.

Ollie Wines played no part in the second half, subbed out of the game after a previous heart injury reared its head once again.

It’s the third time the superstar midfielder has been subbed from games due to heart issues, the first dating back to 2022.

Veteran Travis Boak also came from the field late in another injury concern.

It took the gloss off an impressive showing from the Power, backing up their Hawthorn blitz to record their third win of the season.

The Swans had two separate runs of three-straight goals in the third and fourth quarter to cut the margin below 20.

THE 3-2-1...

Sydney got close but proved their own worst enemy against Port Adelaide as they remain winless at the SCG in 2025.

The Swans were handed some harsh truths about their horror first half where stars including Chad Warner were accused of not performing “up to AFL level”.

Sydney’s disposal efficiency was “sloppy” and “shambolic” as they butchered the ball time and time again.

At quarter time, the forward 50 efficiency had sunk to 25 per cent, and by half time they managed just two goals from 26 entries – at a woeful 8 per cent conversion.

“They were all over the shop,” Fox Footy’s Alastair Lynch said, accusing the side of playing “boring” football.

“They have been horrible by foot,” Jordan Lewis added.

Making matters worse was Sydney’s struggling attack end.

Fox Footy’s Gerard Healy said the Tom McCartin forward line “experiment” can now “be put in the grave” as was easily outworked by Port opponent Esava Ratugolea.

“He had no impact up forward,” Lewis said.

Stats have showed Sydney has dropped from best in the AFL for points scored to 14th and from best to 16th for scores per inside 50.

“They haven’t showed up for the first quarter,” Lewis lamented.

“They have been bullied to be honest.

“They’ve tried to pick the hardest target possible – they need to get back to basics.”

Adding to the Swans woes was Nick Blakey’s butchered chances in the second term.

Three times Blakey was streaming towards goal – but three times he pulled the kick and could only manage a minor score.

“He’s trying to turn the tide for his team,” Eddie Betts said of Blakey.

“He’s getting on the end of it… but it’s costly. You have to take your time.

“If not, lower the eyes, find a target inside 50. If he kicked three of them, the game is turned.”

Instead, after the third miss Port Adelaide went coast to coast and Mitch Georgiades walked into goal to effectively end any Swans charge before half time.

Only the introduction of sub Aaron Francis into the forward line sparked the Swans in the second half – but they simply ran out of time.

“Ultimately accuracy has killed the Swans,” Gerard Healy said.

“You don’t get four points for expected score.”

2. WHO STOPS CONNOR?

Port skipper Connor Rozee is in elite form.

After the shift to halfback produced stunning results against the Hawks, Sydney sent the “padlock” James Jordon tag to Rozee in an attempt to quell his influence.

But that hard tag lasted less than a half as Rozee still proved too damaging.

“When he gets going, he is almost unstoppable,” Jordan Lewis praised on Fox Footy.

Rozee enjoyed the “perfect start” to the contest with 15 disposals, four intercepts, three score involvements, more than 380m gained and a goal in the first half.

“The Sydney Swans thought he’d be an important player to shut down,” Alastair Lynch said.

“They dropped the tag halfway through the second quarter … He was just too dangerous with the tag.”

AFL great Dermott Brereton was impressed with the skipper’s showing at the SCG.

“They’ve got no answer for him!” he said.

“He was almost untaggable.

“He’s just too damaging off halfback … it was a little bit Nick Daicos-ish.

“They are looking to give the ball to him whenever they can.

“His fleet of foot was just too much for James Jordon.”

Making the performance more impressive was the fact Jordon has been the man Swans coach Dean Cox has turned to for a lockdown role.

In Opening Round, Jordon restricted Hawk Will Day to just three touches in the 33 minutes he played in that shutdown role.

In Round 1, he restricted dual Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale to eight touches in 109 minutes while in Round 2, Jordon kept Freo star Caleb Serong to nine disposals in 78 minutes.

Power star Ollie Wines has been subbed out with a heart issue for the third time in a matter of years – but the club remains confident it’s not serious.

The Power mid had come to the bench midway through the second term.

Fox Footy’s Alastair Lynch said Wines spent “five minutes on the pine with the doctors” before attempting to return to the contest.

“He went back on, only lasted 60 seconds then went straight down into the rooms,” Lynch said.

The decision was made to sub Wines out at half time.

“He was having long discussions with the docs,” Lynch said.

“It is for his heart rhythm issues.

“There’s no great concern – but his heart has gone out of rhythm.

“They’ve subbed him out.

“I did ask if it was a serious concern… they are very comfortable with where it is at.”

Fox Footy’s Corbin Middlemas said despite the issue flaring once again, the condition is not believed to be life threatening.

“Third time in the last four years he’s been subbed out with his heart condition,” he said.

“His cardiologist saying a couple of years ago in 2022 when he was diagnosed that it is a non-life threatening condition.

“He was subbed out of a game in 2022 against Melbourne, two years later against the Hawks. On one occasion he missed the next week, the other he played.

“It has happened again for Ollie Wines. Obviously it sounds super serious but the club and Ollie confident it’s something he can play with and manage his way through.

“It’s flared up again today.”
