LUCAN – Neighbours describe a chaotic scene on a quiet street in Lucan Saturday night. Ontario Provincial Police in Middlesex County pursued a driver on Butler Street around 9 p.m. following a disturbance in the area, police said. A vehicle struck two police cruisers before driving off. “I heard the crunch of metal from inside the house,” said Carol Dueck, who saw the aftermath of the crash on a dead-end segment of Butler Street, west of Chestnut Street, in the village of about 4,700 people. “I looked out and saw police lights. . . . I saw a dark vehicle back up and drive away.” Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit said Monday an OPP officer arrived at a Lucan address to investigate a domestic incident. The SIU said a person driving a Ford Focus collided with a police cruiser shortly after officers arrived and drove off. Neighbours said police were at the scene for hours on Saturday night. “There have never been any concerns here. It’s always been a quiet neighbourhood,” a resident who lives near the crash site said Monday. The police pursuit ended 22 kilometres away on Richmond Street in London with a crash near Masonville mall that closed a section of the road until around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Investigators at the scene focused on a damaged Ford Focus that appeared to have collided with an OPP cruiser on Richmond Street near Jacksway Crescent. “Attempts were made to stop the vehicle, including the use of a spike belt,” the SIU said in a statement Monday. “When a police vehicle made contact with the Focus, the Focus spun out of control and struck another vehicle.” The 28-year-old male driver of the Focus tried to run away, the SIU said. Two officers used conducted energy weapons to subdue the man. The man became “unresponsive” and was given first aid by officers at the scene and taken to a local hospital, Middlesex OPP said in a statement on Sunday. A Masonville-area resident, Ahmed Mazed, saw the driver get hit with a Taser by police and then taken away in an ambulance. “He was shouting, screaming and police told the man to get on the ground, to not move and they Tasered him,” Mazed said, referencing the brand name of a stun gun used by police. The identity of the man, and his condition, were not released Monday. The SIU is a civilian police oversight agency that investigates all deaths, serious injuries, shootings or allegations of sexual assault involving police.
