The holidays are a time of indulgence, and nothing says indulgence like the variety of desserts and treats around the holidays. With dozens of sweet and spicy options available, a few options rise to the top of the popularity list.

Zippia ranked the most popular Christmas treat in every state using data from Google Trends. The site studied more than 40 classic Christmas desserts, including candy stocking stuffers, peppermint treats, and cakes galore, and then determined which treat is searched in a disproportionately high amount for each state.

The list of popular treats across the country ranged from candy canes to sugar cookies, egg nog to hot chocolate. So what are Coloradans searching up for Christmas this year? According to Zippia, it's gingerbread cake.

Gingerbread is a staple of holiday treats. Gingerbread cookies, gingerbread men, and gingerbread houses all rely on the popular baked good that usually is flavored with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, or cinnamon. There are plenty of variations for bakers to choose from when making a gingerbread cake from dense cakes made with molasses to light, delicate cakes flavored with brown sugar and ground ginger.

Once Upon a Chef offers a recipe that takes about 50 minutes to prepare and bake. Ingredients include flour, baking soda, salt, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, butter, brown sugar, mild molasses, boiling water, and an egg. The final product is dusted with powdered sugar, and the recipe recommends serving the cake warm from the oven.

A close relative of gingerbread cake is Parkin, a traditional gingerbread treat that originated in Northern England. Parkin is made with oatmeal and black treacle, or molasses. A Parkin recipe by the Spruce Eats includes butter, golden syrup, dark brown sugar, black treacle, flour, oatmeal, ground ginger, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, eggs, and milk. Unlike the traditional gingerbread cake that is best served warm, this recipe recommends letting the cake sit for a while (even days) to let the flavors intermingle and set.

While Colorado digs into gingerbread cake, many other Americans will be enjoying cheesecake, which was the highest rank treat in nine states, the most of any treat included in the survey. Marylanders also favored gingerbread cake, while Pennsylvanians preferred gingerbread cheesecake.
