WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - To continue the celebration of black history month, we took a moment to highlight an inspiring voice within our newsroom Host of the Pick 6 Podcast, Alvin Runnels.

After spending two years at Northeastern State in Oklahoma, Alvin needed a change of scenery, leading him to continue his education at Midwestern State University.

There he discovered an opportunity to intern at News Channel 6, eventually leading to a full-time position.

With his passion being sports, Alvin said he took this time to learn every aspect of the news industry.

“It’s a little bit harder for minorities for us to step the ladder and get to the spot where we want to be at. I got through a lot of emotions, but I’m happy, excited, ready to work, “Runnels said.

Expressing gratitude for his current position, Alvin’s journey thus far has led him to wear a lot of different hats.

From floor directing one moment to editing content the next, Alvin has truly become a jack of all trades.

These experiences have helped him grow and he’s channeling these experiences into his work on the Pick 6 Podcast.

“Learning all the other important jobs, the behind-the-scenes, the audio, the camera, has helped me to understand how to get better at what I truly want to do. The Pick 6 Podcast, man, it’s been a blessing. And with that, it’s helped me make connections, improve myself, and just really, it’s been a challenge because I’m trying something new that the station hasn’t even done and so being able to be the first one to do that, I think it’s pretty amazing, “Runnels said.

As he looks ahead to a future in sports reporting, Alvin is focused on continuing to grow and learn from every experience, while staying true to his purpose.

“We have a purpose in life. God has given us a purpose and a goal, and our paths are never going to be the same. We have a certain path for a reason, and as long as we stay on that path and trust him, you can achieve anything you want to do, ”Runnels said.
