WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A man charged in the double murder of his estranged wife and another man in Wichita’s Riverside neighborhood in the summer of 2023 told a judge that he intends to withdraw a no contest plea to two counts of first-degree murder, entered in December.

In Sedgwick County District Court, the judge appointed new attorneys to represent 63-year-old Charles Crawford and scheduled a status hearing for Feb. 26 on his motion to withdraw his plea.

An affidavit released in September 2023 revealed how apps and police technology led to authorities tracking down Crawford. The 63-year-old is charged in the July 25 shooting deaths of Vanessa Crawford and Donald J. Eckert inside the Riverside home where Vanessa operated a daycare.

Court documents show that Charles “Chuck” Crawford’s daughter was able to track her father’s phone through an app called Life360. The app gave her the real-time location of his phone and a seven-day history. She told officers her father’s phone was located at his trailer at Lake Afton from the evening of July 24 until 6 a.m. on July 25. Vanessa Crawford and Eckert were killed at around 7:30 a.m., according to police.

Officers used FLOCK technology to track Charles’ 2002 White GMC 2500 pickup and found it around 10:12 a.m. on July 25 in the 1200 block of Woodrow, the same area where the murders occurred.
