Who's ready to race this weekend?
Does racing your car across a frozen mountain lake sound like just the adrenaline rush you need? Get ready, because ice racing season is here in Colorado. The “Our Gang 4 Wheelers” ice racing club is excited to kick off the 2021 season, which starts this Saturday, January 9, at Georgetown Lake.
One doesn't need to be a special driver or part of a club to race. In fact, anyone who wants to (with a valid driver's license, insurance, and a 4WD or AWD vehicle) can compete. Those interested can register and pay the $26.50 fee online. The deadline to participate in this weekend’s event is 12 p.m. MST on Friday, January 8.
There will be a mandatory driver meeting at 9 a.m. on the day of the race, with check-in at 7:30 a.m. The race will start shortly afterwards.
Drivers can register for several other races planned until the end of February. If racing across the ice is a little too high stakes for you but you still want to try it out, there's a new "Sunday Funday" track that can be driven; it does require a reservation. That will cost $52.99 and allows four drivers per vehicle to take as many laps as they can in a four-hour window.
Spectators are welcome and always free. Keep in mind that COVID-19 safety guidelines will be followed, including a requirement for face coverings and a six-foot social distancing requirement between different household groups.
Ice racing in Colorado can be traced back to 1965 to a frozen pond above Central City.
