SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Sioux Falls has seen 14 homicides so far in 2024. In 2023, there were two. The wide variance is an anomaly and there’s no connecting factor to the recent increase, according the Sioux Falls Public Information Officer Sam Clemens. “Some of them may be domestic related. We’ve seen in the past, drugs or alcohol are a factor. Sometimes, it’s just a disagreement between people that don’t like each other. So, we’ve seen a whole different list of reasons why they happen,” said Clemens. Prior to the
14th homicide this past weekend , there was only one unsolved homicide from 2024. A
woman was shot and killed on September 4th in the 6000 block of West Tanager Place. The investigations continue. “The detectives are very good at what they do. They’re very good at finding answers and finding people that that committed these crimes, and that’s ultimately our job,” said Clemens. Even if it seems insignificant to you, reporting your tip could be just what law enforcement needs to create the larger picture of what happened. “But it turns out to be very important and helps us in investigations,” said Clemens. Looking at a broader scope of all East River crimes, there were 30 homicides in 2022. Last year, it dropped to 22. So far this year, there have been 32 in eastern South Dakota. “Find the people responsible and hold them accountable. And that’s at least provide some sort of justice to the families and let them know that we’re doing everything we can to find the people responsible,” said Clemens.
